BILLY HICKS

Billy Hicks is Matrix's assistant. He has a wide range of duties which range from performing background checks on targets and victims, to roughing up goons, to cleaning up after Matrix's activities. He does whatever is necessary for Matrix to carry out a contract. Though Billy claims he's never killed anyone in his ten year career with the mob, he planned to do away with a reformed mobster, Terry Cox, in the episode FALSE WITNESS. When he found out that Terry named him as part of Cangelosi's men, and that the police was hiding the snitch after staging his death, Billy planned to finish him off with or without Matrix's help.

Billy leads two lives. As a devoted family man with a loving wife named Esther, and as a caring father who plays basketball with his two young sons, the Hicks family think that Billy is a restaurant consultant who boots around in a classic 1967 yellow Mustang. As a member of the mob family, Billy is loyal to Matrix, a man he has known for 15 years. They've helped each other get out of tight situations on several occasions. Most notably, in the episode LOVE KILLS, Billy made the mistake of dumping the body of murdered mob boss for his ex-girlfriend Angela Carlton. But Angela framed him for the murder and his affair with her was blown out in the open, and Matrix had to work fast and hard to clear Billy of the murder. Conversely, when Matrix was also framed by a current love interest for intentionally running over her father with his corvette in the episode TO ERR IS HUMAN, the quick-thinking Billy Hicks found evidence to prove that the victim was already dead when the body was hit by Matrix, hence, clearing his name.

PHILLIP JARRETT

The role of Billy Hicks is played by Canadian actor Phillip Jarrett, sometimes credited as Phil Jarrett. Phil emigrated from Jamaica to Canada at age nine, and has been in the acting business since the mid 1980s. He had originally planned to become a public school principal after completing his degree at the University of Waterloo, during which time he played for the Warriors basketball team, but was later swayed by a local modelling scout to try out some modelling work. With some runway experience in Toronto, Phil hired an agent and tried out for some acting gigs after having acted in a campus play that was directed by Susan Forrest, a known casting agent in Toronto.

In a rare interview for THE TORONTO STAR (1992-12-22; E1) Phil spoke about the series as follows: "We (he and lead Nick Mancuso) are hitmen, best in the world. He pulls the trigger, I get rid of the body ... what makes us (Matrix and Hicks) so good is the body is never found ... we're a team ..." He was pleased with the premise of the series which allowed him to play a tough but good guy and credits creator Coleman Luck (Left Behind TV Series; Equalizer) for the role.

Phil has appeared in numerous Canadian television and films. Prior to the Matrix series, Phil was regular cast member Sgt. OC Phillips on the series KATTS AND DOG. More recently, Phil appeared as recurring character, Brian Marks, in the first season of the hit Canadian TV drama series TRADERS. Current film credits include "Harvard Man," "The Caveman's Valentine" and a Canadian made-for-tv production titled "Whitewash: The Clarence Brandley Story" in 2002. Phil has also guest starred in popular television series, some of which are available in re-runs: Due South, Twice in a Lifetime, Forever Knight, and CTV's Blue Murder and many many others.
