Matrix has a hard time trying to convince police Detective Carl Dressler that Ned Hopper was already dead when he hit him with his Corvette on a dark road one winter evening and that he's being framed by the victim's daughter, also his current girlfriend, Andrea Hopper, for the murder. After the corvette is impounded, Billy inspects the car and finds some chrome scratches on the car and sets out to prove that Andrea and the Hopper trustee and accomplice Harry Thacker had killed Ned, suspended him from a tree and onto Matrix's driving path. Andrea also hired a forgery expert to change the will to ensure that she inherited her father's entire fortune. Dressler also clears his own name after being on the verge of suspension by Internal Affairs for accepting bribe money. Turns out he's building a trust fund to help pay for facial plastic surgey for a young female victim named Victoria Hall, from an investigation that went wrong and for which Dressler feels personally responsible. And Matrix didn't initially understand why Shamus Cobb, Private Investigator, the guide in the City In-Between, directed him towards helping Dressler to save his career.
