In order to nab mob boss Vincent Cangelosi, the police stage the death of their snitch, a reformed mobster named Tommy Cox, who's also a childhood friend of Matrix's. But Matrix also finds out through Flanagan, a reporter in the City In-Between, that Tommy signed a deposition dated in the future that will implicate both Matrix and Billy. Tensions arise between the two partners as Matrix is expected to save Tommy from Cangelosi while Billy wants to finish him off. When Cangelosi finds Tommy, Matrix steps in and kills his boss while Matrix's former girlfriend and Detective, Marilyn Clausen, witnesses the gangland shooting. Rather than turning in Matrix for his involvement with the mob, Marilyn decides that Cangelosi's death is enough to close the file, while Tommy Cox claims amnesia.
